On the island of Bird Key, a home simply referred to as the Palm House by its owners has again been recognized, this time not for its design or its size but for its green attributes. The Florida Green Building Coalition, FGBC for short, has featured the home on its project spotlight for those thinking green to learn more about it, and for good reason: at 8,189 square feet it is the largest LEED certified home in Sarasota. In addition to its LEED Silver rating, it received several other awards and certifications including the Aurora Award for design, an Emerald rating under the National Green Building Standard, a Platinum rating from the FGBC, a Gold rating for water conservation and an Energy Star certification. Cumulatively, these awards say that this Sarasota home is big, beautiful and green.
Richard Perrone, president of Perrone Construction, elaborates on the project, “Many of the practices we’ve had in place already over the past 33 years were what you would consider the components of green construction now, though it wasn’t called that back then, they were just good solid practices, we tweaked those practices slightly to fit tighter within the guidelines of the different governing bodies to create a LEED certified home that Sarasota hadn’t really seen anything like before.”
Though the Sarasota home construction is focused on renewables and is certified “green” it’s important not to forget about the design itself, for which it won the coveted Aurora award.. It’s an Italianate villa and it’s very authentic, the home is 75% clad in Syrian Ebla Limestone hand carved on site, the soffits and corbels are western red cedar with a deep rich stain. Inside the home the kitchen, family room and stairwell are clad in Texas limestone. There is a large home theater, a wine cellar, a craft room and a library. Custom woodworking adorns the interior, of course all of which is FSC certified.
“The most important thing to our company other than the quality of the homes we build is the authenticity and character of it. We examined traditional examples of this style for inspiration. You look at the home its quality and its size and most people would never imagine that it is such a highly rated “green” home.” Says Richard Sarasota, luxury homes are fairly abundant but this one really stands out and makes a statement, for those that want a LEED certified luxury home without compromise, you in fact can have your cake and eat it too.
