The Cascade House, a Marvel in Design and Craftsmanship, Awarded the Cover Feature of LUXE Magazine.
The story of the Cascade House begins with the unyielding desire by its owners for the very best of what Sarasota has to offer. Resting on what many would consider to be Sarasota’s most sought-after waterfront property in Harbor Acres, the Cascade House had a world-class design team and a visionary owner. From the very beginning, we collaborated with such synergy that, despite breaking ground amidst a global pandemic, with a proactive approach the pieces came together with ease and the build moved like clockwork. Our clients sought a resort-like ambiance, a house for a family getaway. A home that captures the world-renowned spectacular sunsets that make Sarasota such a magical place on the Gulf Coast of Florida. They desired a sophisticated, modern feel but wanted a home where they could put their feet up and have a place for their young kids to, well, be kids. The result is an architectural masterpiece that draws from tropical British West Indies design and is fitted with all the modern amenities.
“What we landed on was nothing ornate but still sophisticated and tropical in nature.” – John Cooney, Stofft Cooney Architects
The architecture takes its inspiration from the West Indies, explains architect John Cooney. Cooney sketched out a light-filled dwelling that utilizes dark-stained wood, compound pitched rooflines, and an entry pavilion. Cooney notes how lush the landscaping, loggia, and fire and water elements by landscape designer Stephen Hazeltine, including a walkway that bridges glassy pools-help boost the retreat’s island vibe. Also on the homeowner’s wish list were ample guest quarters (a portion of the house contains three extra bedrooms, with double doors that can close off the entire wing for privacy); a central club room with billiards, ping pong tables, and a wet bar; and plenty of outdoor living spaces.
Relaxed, Tropical Style with Modern Amenities – “Coastal but not Cliché”
Nodding to the exterior’s appearance while not hewing to it, a clean-lined décor scheme sets the scene indoors. “Our clients did not want traditional furniture, palm fronds or bamboo,” Wolf-Anthony notes of the motifs often associated with Caribbean design. “They leaned towards lighter, brighter tones and textures.” It was important to make the home livable, relaxed, and child-friendly while still elevated and elegant. Thoughtfully emphasizing the views (and those sunsets) affected her choices, too: The interior designer opted for tonal finishes and fabrics with few patterns, letting a wash of creamy whites and natural hues prevail. Rather than stand out, the neutral-on-neutral color palette highlights the interior architecture. Just look up, Cooney advises: The ceilings are intricately detailed. “We have coffered, painted, tongue-and-groove, vaulted, and more,” he points out. “Every room in this house has its charm and character.”
“You can’t walk into a single space in this home and not feel it’s well executed from both an interiors and a construction perspective.” Concurs Ricky Perrone, Perrone Construction
