The Effect of Good Architecture on Emotion
Every year we take a break to take part in the PINC Experience (People, Ideas, Nature, Creativity) conference in Sarasota. It’s an incredible experience and a place to find inspiration in some of the most unlikely places. This year we received a special treat in the form of an incredibly entertaining talk on the effect of architecture on emotion by renowned digital artist Stefan Sagmeister.
To illustrate the importance of beautiful architecture (where form exists for the sake of form and doesn’t necessarily follow function) Stefan brought up an interesting illustration.
Penn Station and Grand Central station exist just blocks from one another in New York. Penn is very utilitarian while Grand Central is ornate and beautiful. MIT conducted a study using an algorithm to identify if the tone of a tweet was negative or positive and narrowed their study to these two locations. The results showed that Penn Station had an overwhelming majority of NEGATIVE tweets broadcast from it while the tweets from Grand Central were overwhelmingly POSITIVE. Stefan used this as an effective illustration of how architecture and form have a major effect on our moods.
